MEDIA RELEASE BY: New South Wales Bar Association, The Law Society of New South Wales.

The President of the New South Wales Bar Association Arthur Moses SC and the President of The Law Society of NSW Pauline Wright have expressed their concern at comments by Federal Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, the Hon Peter Dutton MP this morning regarding the legal rights of refugees in legal proceedings.

The apparent agreement by Minister Dutton with a statement that lawyers acting for refugees are “un-Australian” was inappropriate and should not have been made, particularly when lawyers who may be the subject of that statement are acting on a pro bono basis in matters in which the minister is the respondent.

The legal and medical professions in NSW have united in support of the introduction of marriage equality laws.

The President of the New South Wales Bar Association Arthur Moses SC, the President of The Law Society of NSW Pauline Wright and the President of the Australian Medical Association (NSW) Professor Brad Frankum have come together to express their support for same sex marriage legislation at the federal level.

Additional funding is desperately needed to help families who are struggling through the Family Law Courts.

Far North Coast Law Society President Clarissa Huegill said the Federal Government’s budget commitment of $80 million to family law and family violence services would help with urgent repairs to the family law system.

Every year hundreds of people are injured on North Coast roads but to date not everybody has been entitled to be compensated for injuries received in those motor accidents. From 1 December 2017 the NSW Government will introduce statutory CTP benefits for all those injured in motor accidents regardless of fault unless they have been charged or convicted of a serious driving offence.

During the three-month amnesty, anyone can hand in unregistered firearms or firearm-related items for registration or surrender at approved drop-off points without penalty and without fear of prosecution.

Resources for our trial courts must be maintained to reduce chronic delays that are hampering access to justice.

The NSW Government’s recent $200 million investment into justice and $6 million for community legal centres will assist in plugging holes in an ailing system.

Funding for the trial courts, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (NSW) and Legal Aid NSW must be maintained to reduce the severe backlogs and delays that have built up over the past four years.
